What Is Your Openion?

I'm really torn. I love Dean Martin, and really, who doesn't? There is a CD coming out tomorrow of Dean Martin duets. My knee-jerk reaction upon hearing of this CD was outrage and it would be complete garbage. How could they possibly do these songs justice? Why wouldn't you just listen to his originals? My curiosity got the best of me so I went to Amazon to hear some clips. There is a trailer for the CD there too. I watched it. It almost has me convinced to give it a try. Am I about to covert to the dark side? Am I about to cast my vote (as money) to the record industry to keep making unimaginative slop to make a quick buck? Or am I just being to snobbish and I should just give it a try?

  1. I think duets are great, with a live body!!

This would have been a fun project before he bought his pine pajamas.

I'd stay away from it, don't feed the machine!

I say don't waste your time or money. Dino doesn't need help!

I've given it a quick listen and I wasn't impressed. I think the only tracks that are worth anything are the one's with Kevin Spacey. They do some cool editing tricks to make it seem like they're recording together but it still doesn't feel real. I'm fine without this one in my collection.

  4. Well, you know why they do these duet albums? It brings the music of the likes of Dean to a whole new generation. Let us record companies do our job and hopefully we can bring the classics like Dean to a younger generation. Thanks for the blog! Ed - The Music Man

  5. Don't do it. For God's sakes, don't do it. This is for people who think Michael Buble is the king of cool.

This statement alone has put me firmly in the "don't bother" column.

  7. This whole "Dead body duet" trend is nasty. I read the song line up and I thought I was watching a Saturday Night Live sketch.

I'm pretty sure you have the real Dino in your record collection. Stick with the real thing, fergitabout the pretenders.

I mean really, this record company has some nerve...

  8. Brainwerk,
I believe you will see more of this type of thing since the "Dean Martin Family Trust" sold the rights to Dino's image. Also now that Greg Garrison is gone because he controled a lot of what Dean had produced on video. I'm a big Dino collector so I'll be buying this but I'm not all that happy about this whole process.

BTW. First time to your blog...It's great.

  9. ugh...why do they do this? The only thing that gave me pause is that Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's on it, and they had a couple of fine discs in the past, but it's such a blatant attempt to get us to spend.

I feel for you though, if your interest is piqued, it's hard to resist...

and wow...what kind of garbage did that anon poster above leave you? ouch.

  12. You guys are right. It is crap. I was swayed for a while because I buy everything that comes out with Dean even if I have the songs on 4 other CDs. THANKS ALL!

Do the people who are on this CD have careers that are so poor they must latch on to Dino?
I do not know. Please comment.

Give me the real deal or nothing. Sad how the record industry continues to exploit the dearly departed. Even sadder is that they don't make talents like Dean-o anymore.

Dino needed NO help singing when he was here...and he sure as hell don't need it now!

Nonsense. The duets sounds like they might be interesting. Even if they're bad, so what? We'll always have the originals anyway.

Who knows? There might be some duet gem among the crap! I can't wait.
PS Are you going to post the CD here?

    Hey everybody,

I gave the whole album a listen the other day and I wasn't a huge fan of the duets but this album is worth it just for the way they use Dino's studio chatter. If your a serious fan you'll want this just to hear all the jokes and studio talk of Dean's that they incorporated. There's also a gorgeous a capella version of Dino singing Brahm's lullaby.

I think my only problem with the duets on this album is the choice of artists. I don't understand why they didn't use artists with actual sentimental value to Dean and people who knew him. I would have liked to see more people like Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Jr., Nancy Sinatra, and I would have loved to hear a serious or comical duet with Jerry. I mean he did a song with Deana for her tribute album and I would have just loved this album if the artists would have known Dino at least. That's just my opinion.

  22. The only duet that I really did not like was the one by Joss Stone. She was just so out of sync or vibe with his type of singing that it was pitiful. Paris Bennett on the other hand did a fantastic job - you would've thought Dean was in the room with her.

  27. I really thought they did a good job on it. However, I was sadly disappointed in the Joss Stone track. It was like she was slightly off tempo or something - and her styling just not in keeping with Dino. If you are going to work with a track already laid down - YOU'RE the one that has to change to fit the track.

  28. Good or bad, I wish this trend of "singing with corpses" would come to an end. I agree with the commenter who said it would make more sense to have had people that knew Dino intimately sing the songs. Kevin Spacey??!! Sheesh! No "brainwerk" needed for this one.☺

  29. Ok. I found a free download of the album and here's my 2 cents:

    Track #:

    1. w/Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (Who?!)BBVD sounds like he wandered into the studio during the recording and decided to join in on the chorus. Annoying and pointless.

2.w/Kevin Spacey - Washed up actor tries for last gasp of relevance by mimicking dead legend. Irrelevance remains victorious. Pointless.

3.w/Chris Botti - Great track. Why? No vocals, just trumpet and Dino. Thank you Jeezus!

4.w/Paris Bennett - Slick move. Use American I-dull castaway with a famous last name, and people will just assume she is the daughter of Tony. Very shrewd. Well, name game aside, this almost sounds like the real McCoy! She actually sounds like she is having fun, giggly playfulness and all. Good work Paris.

    5. Just Dino and orchestra. No brainer.

6.w/ Robbie Williams - Why is this guy popular? Nevermind, don't answer that. Pointless.

7.w/Joss Stone - Oh..My..God. I've always hated Joss Stone, but this has taken my disdain to a whole new level. She sounds like a 80yr old woman with Parkinson's (And my sincere apologies to every 80yr old woman with Parkinson's for that analogy). Horribly pointless and pointlessly horrible.

8.w/Dave Koz - Again just Dino & sax. No worries.

9.w/Martina McBride - Um..I'm assuming that this song was originally a duet and they edited in Martina. WHAT THE HELL WAS THE POINT?? Also, this song need not EVER be re-recorded again. EVER!

10.w/La Spacey again. - Now he's really starting to piss me off! I guess his hackneyedness wasn't apparent the first time around. Do I even HAVE to say the 'P'-word? (even the outtake slapped on the end of this can't save this track)

11.w/Shelby Lynne and BigVoodooDaddyWarbucks or whatever his dang name is - Shelby's voice is sassy enough to work well with Dean's. Again Big Daddy is hiding in the chorus, but that's okay. Shelby's doing all the work anyway. Nice track.

12.w/Tiziano Ferro - Now THIS track is definitely gonna piss you off. It starts with some of Dino's silkiest vocals on the first verse. Then in stomps Tizzy who's voice sounds like a bull in a hina shop by comparison. Just f**ks up the whole vibe. It was such a jolt, I immediately skipped to the next track. Horrible.

13.w/Charles Aznavour - WHO???! Sounds like he went to the Spacey School of Hacks. Better than La Spacey to be sure, but nothing memorable.

    14. Dino sings a lullaby a cappella. Very well-placed in the track order. 'Cause chile, you gonna NEED a soothing lullaby (and a strong cocktail) after listening to most of this dreck!
