Stop in, look around, have a drink and crank some tunes. I'll be posting some songs ripped from records, some out of print and hard to find stuff, some songs by artists you should be listening to, and a few mixes here and there.

Christmas At The MASH 4077th

There were multiple Christmas episodes of MASH but I think I like this one best. It comes as just the twelveth episode of the entire series. Hawkeye is going to play Santa for a bunch of local kids when he gets the word that there are injured GIs pinned down just 20 miles away. Next comes that famous shot of him being lowered from a helecopter into a fox hole with his Santa suite on. The episode takes place at Christmas but there really aren't a lot of Christmas references. Its the first episode where he writes home to his dad and narrates most of the episode.

Cool Christmas Find

I was wrapping Christmas presents tonight and really wanted to share one before I wrapped it. Earlier this week when I was at an antique store strolling for cool old Christmas decorations I came across this. It's a snowman that sits on your turntable as you play your Christmas records! Isn't this just the coolest? I'm giving it to my brother but I'm really temped to keep it with my Christmas records... Just wanted to share this with you guys before I gave it away. Who knows when I'll find another.

Ed Grimley Is "The Fella Who Couldn't Wait For Christmas"

Another classic SCTV Christmas sketch this time starring the excellent Martin Shot as Ed Grimley. He's dancing around his room on Christmas Eve and the clock just can't move fast enough. We've all been there! I love this one.

Bob And Doug McKenzie "Beer Nog"

Christmas in The Great White North. This short from one of the two SCTV Christmas specials has Bob and Doug discussing beer nog, decorating the tree with empty beer bottles and smokes, and exchanging surprise Christmas presents. Great!

A Great Old Christmas Picture

I found this great old image up at our family cabin this summer. It's my mom and dad before kids. (I'm the youngest of eight!) Also in the picture is my grandma and great-grandma. I'm guessing it's from the mid to early 50's. What is so great is that it was from a color slide. Photography at the time was primarily black and white, so this is a real treat to see it in color. Look at how decked out this place was for Christmas! That is what I call decorating for the holidays. Looks like my mom was lucky enough to get the Ironing Caddy she had her eye on...

ALF's Christmas Away From Melmac

ALF is having a hard time keeping his Earth holidays straight. After hiding eggs on Christmas Eve, he chops the Christmas tree up for fire wood. The ever-dopey Willie decides to get a fake tree. This turns out to be a disaster so ALF and Willie head up to chop down their own tree. This of course turns out to be not as easy as expected...

It's, Like Christmas... Totally!

Up today are clips from the Christmas episode of Square Pegs. I was hoping for more totally 80's soundbytes from this... But really, only the good ones were from Johnny Slash. Let's face it. He was the only reason to watch the show. Totally.

Christmas Comes To Hazzard

The good old boys are hijacked delivering a truck load of Christmas trees to the boy scouts. Who is behind this? Boss Hogg of course. He wants to corner the market on Christmas trees in Hazzard County. The only problem is that the goons he hires to pull off the job also target him. Bo and Luke Duke to the rescue! After just chasing each other around for an hour and causing lots of property damage, they decide to put their differences aside for Christmas and celebrate together. Isn't Christmas amazing?

I just looked back at some Christmas postings from 2006 and 2007. I was surprised to find a lot of links to downloads still working. Click on the album cover above if you want to recapture a little of that childhood Christmas feeling. Get them while the links still work!

Hogan's Heroes Christmas Scheme

It's not exactly a Christmas episode, but a reference to Christmas. The guys have a German general in their barracks against his will. They are desperately trying to get him to tell them where this next bombing will be. Their plan is to make him think he is dying, so he will send a message back to Berlin. They tell him he won't last the three months to Christmas so they will celebrate it early. Hilarity ensues...

Christmas Sitcom Soundbytes are back!

Because nobody demanded it. I'm bringing them back anyway. I was on the fence about doing the Christmas sitcom soundbyes again this year. I hit most of my favorites last year and didn't come across too many new ones over the year. Then a couple of weeks ago I received a very nice comment from an anonymous visitor saying how much he enjoyed the soundbytes last Christmas. Somebody was listening to them? Cool! That gets me charged up. He told me about two Hogan's Heroes episodes with Christmas references. Awesome! I looked them up and BANG! I was excited again. Starting soon I'll be posting more soundbytes. Upcoming posts will be Hogans Heroes, The Dukes of Hazzard, Alf, Happy Days and even a Three Stooges short. If you have a request, please drop me a line and I'll try and find it. Also, all of the soundbytes posted last season are still up, so go back to December 2010 and look them over if you haven't already. I even made a compilation of the best - Volume 5 of Check The Cool Wax - Christmas TV Burnout.

Christmax Wax :: The Best of Check The Cool Wax Christmas REPOST

Thanks for the requests to repost this mix. It's fun to know people would still like to hear it. This mix was made five years ago using (mostly) songs that were not yet available on CD. Listening to it again I'm pretty proud of it. So much time went into ripping all of those records in. Life is just too busy these days to keep that up... The songs take me back to listening to Christmas music on the family record player and going to the Christmas party at the town library. They remind me of Christmas shopping at stores that are no longer around and Christmas decorations that used to adorn every store and street corner... Remember how decked out stores would get back then? I miss that. Maybe this mix will help jog a few memories for you too. It's dusty mix of Christmas Wax from the island of misfit songs. I hope to get to another vinyl Christmas mix someday, but for now, this will have to do.

Merry Christmas everybody!

Hey Hey It's The Monkees Christmas! (Repost)

Hi everyone. Let's get this party started shall we? I'd first like to do a re-post. The Monkees' soundbytes I posted last Christmas sounded a little hollow... I don't know what happened, but they didn't sound as good as the other show's soundbytes. Being how this is one of my favorite Christmas shows, I just had to do them over. That and the fact that my brother was making a Monkees Christmas Mix and he wanted them to sound better... Anywho... Below is the original post with the eleven new sounds. I also put them in a play list so the page doesn't have to load all of those different players.

-------------------

Today's soundbytes are from The Monkees episode creatively name The Christmas Show. It's about the prefab four being hired to watch young Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster) over the holidays. The little brat doesn't believe in Christmas spirit and the boys do everything they can to help him find it. They have no luck at all until they realize they have only shown him superficial things and not peace and love. This one is for all you closet Monkees fans out there. I know there's a lot of us. They were a huge influence on The Beatles you know...

The Christmas Show - Season 2, Episode 15. Aired: December 25, 1967

Here is the cover we made for our Monkees Christmas mix. Turned out pretty cool. What do you think? Feel free to use it if you make your own Monkees Christmas Mix or send me a message and I'll get you a higher resolution version.

Glen Campbell :: Ghost On Canvas

Before I start up the regular Christmas postings, I would like to take a moment and post something. It's the newest and probably last Glen Campbell video called Ghost On Canvas. Wow! It's pretty powerful. This is to be Glen's last album, I guess he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and he is retiring. The video reflects back to the pivotal times in Glen's career with nods to Dean Martin, Elvis, The Monkees, Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, his TV show and more. The video stars Paul Westerberg of (my favorites) The Replacements, the writer of the song. The director deserves a big thumbs up here too! It's beautiful.

Cheers Thanksgiving!

I thought I'd continue the tradition I started last Christmas and post some TV soundbytes for Thanksgiving. When I thought about doing this, this episode Thanksgiving Orphans instantly came to mind. For all sorts of reasons, the gang of Cheers are alone for Thanksgiving so they decide to have a Thanksgiving meal at Carla's. Tensions start to rise when the turkey takes forever to get done and it ends up in a food fight.

Happy Halloween Everyone!

Always a day late. I had planned on posting more music and sound bytes up to Halloween, but I took a last minute offer to go to Vegas for Halloween. Had to try that at least once. I'm the Zombie Shriner... I'll be posting a bunch of stuff at Christmas and even a couple of things for Thanksgiving. Check back.

Frankie Stein :: Monster Melodies

Here are four tracks from Frankie Stein's Monster Melodies. Tracks are: All Choked Up, Doctor Spook, In A Groovy Grave and Swingin Head. I picked out the surf and twist type songs. A sax takes the lead on these, kinda wish it would have been a guitar. NOTE: this record was severely damaged, but the cover was just too cool not to post.

Lon Chaney Jr. :: Spider Baby Theme

Today we have a totally wacky one from the ever dopey Lon Chaney Jr. He really sounds like a whack job on this one. Do you think he has to try for that? I can't really think of him any other way than like Lennie from Of Mice And Men. Here he sings the opening song to Spider Baby. I labeled it as the theme, but I'm not sure that it is. This was taken from the VHS and is perfect for Halloween.

  LON CHANEY JR :: SPIDER BABY THEME

Bob Hope :: Halloween

I really wanted to keep posting these holidays throughout the year, but I both forgot and was too lazy. Starting back up again I have Bob Hope talking about Halloween. You can go back to last December's posts if you want to hear Christmas.

Ted Cassidy :: The Lurch

We at Check The Cool Wax love when TV personalities record music! Here we have Ted Cassidy, AKA Lurch, not so much singing, but grumbling over a bubbly sixties pop song. It's most excellent. It's not all that monstery for Halloween, but it is our favorite butler. Enjoy. I haven't found this 45 yet! This is from an out of print CD.
